Our local association has partnered with Kenny and Leslie Park to work with the Hispanic community in the Northern Neck.  Twice a month, churches across our association host a worship service for the Latinos.  This past Sunday we had the privilege of hosting them at Beale.  Close to 40 Spanish speaking folks came to our church for fellowship, a meal and a time of worship.  A team of about eight provided the dinner.  Usually Kenny will preach to the gathering, but on this night, Veronica had the honor.
Friends, we live in a day where it is getting scary to be Brown.    I wish you could read some of the stories that cross our computer via news sources around the country.  It is frightening to read about the abuses being perpetrated against Spanish speaking folks.  The KKK and other hate groups are seeing resurgence in their ranks due to the fear of immigration.  I wish I had answers for the immigration situation but I don’t.

The only thing I can offer is this:
The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt . I am the Lord your God.
[Leviticus 19:34 (NIV) ]

I don’t believe the church is called to resolve the politics of our current situation.  But I do believe that our churches are called to be vehicles of grace and mercy to those who are poor and voiceless.  I am grateful that you took the time and energy to be a blessing last week.  Thank you for cleaning the church for our guests to have nice place to gather.  Thank you for preparing a wonderful meal.  Thank you for stretching past your comfort zone and communicating across language barriers.  We can’t solve the problems of immigration across this nation.  But we can be a blessing in our little corner of the world.
